Autumn weekend in the Sauerland
When our short trip to Korbach last year turned out to be quite pleasant, the small number of participants decided it would be worthwhile repeating the experience.
So, this year, we are going to try something similar and spend an autumn weekend a little further away, in the Sauerland, from 23 to 25 October.
More specifically, we are targeting the area between Willingen (Upland) and Brilon.
There are a number of points of interest nearby in Willingen:
- Hochheideturm (a tall viewing tower)
- Mühlenkopfschanze (the world’s largest hill ski jump)
- Skywalk (the world’s third longest pedestrian suspension bridge)
Further afield, moving from Hessen into North Rhine-Westphalia, there are
- Diemelsee reservoir
- Brilon, with its historic old town
- and more.
There is probably more than enough here for one weekend outing, so the actual itinerary and choice of entertainment is still pending.
The general outline is:
Friday, 23 October
- Travel to Willingen or Usseln by train or car pool.
- Explore one of the nearby attractions.
- Dinner
Saturday, 24 October:
- Take a road trip to Brilon
- Visit the historic old town
- Explore several attractions along the way.
Sunday, 25 October:
- Explore the surroundings of Willingen a little more
- Short and easy walk through the beautiful landscape
- Travel back to Frankfurt, possibly stopping at a nice place like Wetzlar or Marburg on the way.
We will be staying in Usseln because it is slightly cheaper than Willingen. If you are interested, please try to book your own hotel rooms there.
The final deadline for sign-ups is Wednesday 30 September, but since affordable rooms are filling up fast, it would be wise to book sooner rather than later.
