Weekend outing to Korbach and the Edersee reservoir

Fourteen years ago, Pickwicks visited the Edersee reservoir and its surroundings. Now, we are planning a slightly different weekend trip to the area in September.
Korbach is a quaint little town about two hours north of Frankfurt with many half-timbered houses in its historic centre and a well-preserved city wall. Nearby attractions include a visitor gold mine and the “Korbacher Spalte,” a 20-metre-deep cleft in the Earth’s surface which has yielded important fossil finds.
Korbach is about 45 minutes from the Edersee dam, so we plan to visit Korbach on the first day of the trip and then explore some of the Edersee attractions on the way back to Frankfurt on Sunday.
As of now, the plan comprises:
Day 1
- Travel to Korbach by car pool and arrive in the late morning
- Snack lunch in Korbach
- Guided tour: “Within the Town Walls”
- Underground tour of the visitor gold mine
- Short hike nearby
- Dinner.
Day 2
After breakfast, explore some of the Edersee attractions:
- Edersee (1-hour boat trip)
- Reservoir dam visitor centre
- Take the funicular railway up to Peterskopf hill and enjoy a short hike at the top
- Visit the “Atlantis” sunken villages, which reappear at low water levels
- Wildlife park
- Treetop walk
- Return to Frankfurt.
This is an outline itinerary which will have to be adapted according to weather conditions, the Edersee’s water level in September, and the interests of the participants.
Some people have already booked rooms at the Hotel Am Dalwigker Tor. If you would like to join this trip, we recommend making your own booking at this hotel. Please send Bob an email to indicate which of the above programme items interest you most.
